AT THE END - IN THE END

People often confuse the phrases at the end and in the end.
In the end is similar to finally or eventually. Use it when you are saying what happens finally, after everything has been thought about or discussed:

✗ He had promised to share his prize, but at the end he didn’t.
✓ He had promised to share his prize, but in the end he didn’t.
In an ideal world, teenagers would talk openly to their parents who would in the end respect their child’s decision.

At the end means in the final part of an event or period of time, and it is mainly used in the pattern at the end of.

Remember to say goodbye and thank-you at the end of the interview.
The band arrives back in London today, at the end of a 20-day, 19-concert, European tour.

Hay dos maneras de decir al final en inglés – in the end y at the end – pero ¿cuál es la diferencia entre los dos términos?
Cada expresión tiene su propio significado y cuando leo las explicaciones de las diferencias, siempre leo cómo hay que interpretar la situación para elegir la forma correcta.  Es una manera pero voy a simplificarlo.

al final de	es decir “al final + de”	=	at the end of
al final,	es decir “al final + coma (,) / pausa”	=	in the end,

Cuando al final va seguido por “de”, se dice at the end of.
Cuando es “al final,” sin “de” y normalmente con una coma o con una pausa al hablar (p.ej. al final -pausa- fuimos al cine), se dice in the end.
Y para que quede más claro, te pongo una definición simple para cada una:

in the end	“al final” en el sentido de “finalmente”
at the end	“al final” en el sentido de “en la última parte” o “en la parte final”

Ejemplos:

i)  In the end

Él quería ver el partido pero, al final, decidió cenar con su novia para celebrar su cumpleaños.

He wanted to watch the match but in the end, he decided to have dinner with his girlfriend to celebrate her birthday.

Habíamos pensado ir un mes a Australia pero, al final, nos conformamos con dos semanas en Italia.

We had planned to go to Australia for a month but in the end, we settled for two weeks in Italy.

Iba a perder el tren así que, al final, tomé un taxi a la estación.

I was going to miss the train so in the end, I took a taxi to the station.

ii)  At the end

Al final de la película, el hombre muere.

At the end of the film, the man dies.

Siempre estoy muy cansado al final de la semana.

I’m always very tired at the end of the week.

Al final del partido, celebramos la victoria como locos.

At the end of the match, we celebrated the victory like crazy.

Tengo una reunión al final del día.

I have a meeting at the end of the day.

Por cierto, at the end of the day es una expresión en inglés que significa al fin y al cabo o a fin de cuentas.

Al fin y al cabo, tienes que trabajar duro si quieres tener éxito.

At the end of the day, you have to work hard if you want to be successful.

Ojo: En ocasiones, “al final” se dice al final de la frase y no va seguido ni por el “de”, ni por una coma o pausa.  En estas situaciones es necesario identificar qué tipo de “al final” tenemos y eso se hace reemplazando el “al final” con “finalmente” o “en la última parte / en la parte final” y viendo cuál suena mejor.
Para demostrarlo, te pongo un par de ejemplos:

1.	No fui al cine al final.
2.	El libro era apasionante con un giro inesperado al final.

1. En el primer ejemplo se puede reemplazar “al final” por “finalmente”. “En la última parte” o “en la parte final” no quedaría bien aquí, así que se utiliza in the end.
2. En el segundo ejemplo se puede reemplazar “al final” por “en la última parte” o “en la parte final” y se mantiene el significado mientras que “finalmente” no quedaría bien, así que se utiliza at the end.

1.	I didn’t go to the party in the end.
2.	The book was gripping with an unexpected twist at the end.

Ahora que entiendes los dos tipos de “al final”, ¿cómo se puede recordar cuál se utiliza con in y cuál con at?
Regla de memorización: Si piensas que se puede sustituir al final + coma/pausa por finalmente, “finalmente” lleva un “in” en medio – finalmente.  Entonces, cuando es al final en el sentido de finalmente, se dice in the end.
Ahora te toca a ti.  ¿Cómo se traduce lo siguiente?  (Respuestas debajo).
1.  Al final, decidimos no hacerlo.
2.  Al final de la reunión, decidimos seguir adelante con la propuesta.
3.  Llegaron tarde, así que al final vieron otra película.
4.  Al final, vamos a verlos al final de este mes.
5.  Al fin y al cabo, no es nuestro problema.
